The times are a-changing [18 Feb 2011|08:45pm]

It's the end of an era, the last member of the "Muskoka Five", Tomas Kaberle, has been traded to Boston. And we don't even get our own first pick back. However, prospects and draft picks seem to be Burke's prerogative in building a new team. It does seem a little counter-intuitive for a team still determined to make a playoff run (although the better they do, the worse their first round draft pick that no longer belongs to them will be).

I don't disagree Kaberle wasn't as fantastic this season as he's been in the past, and perhaps even is past his peak at this point. I do, however, appreciate what he's done for the team over the past 10 years. The number of articles on the Toronto Star's sports page with his name in the title is one testament to his contribution.

But, moving on, there's some legit optimism about the Leafs making a playoff run. Kevin McGran has an interesting break-down of what they need to do (or what needs to happen) for them to pull off 8th place. I'd like to be optimistic, but I still think they'll either fall short by a few points or require someone else to win/lose to hold the spot by a point.

Despite the way the game is going tonight (or perhaps in spite of), is anyone else feeling as disillusioned about the Leafs as I am? I creeped this community's calendar and I think the near exponential decrease in posts over the past three seasons speaks for itself.

What's your fix for the team, realistically?

They have cap space, but there aren't many attractive players waiting to be picked up. Kaberle may have lost some value with the way this season's started. Wilson is Burke's BFF and will bomb the entire season before getting fired.

It's easier than you think to meet the Leafs! [11 Oct 2010|08:55pm]

This weekend I got a tip from a friend on Leafspace that you can hang around outside the MasterCard Centre where the Leafs practice to meet the team. I'd never considered doing this before because I didn't have appropriate transportation (nor the knowledge of practice times). If you ever get the opportunity to head over to the MasterCard Centre before or right after the Leafs practice, I highly recommend it. bhavna_grint and I went this morning and met the entire team as they arrived, minus 5 players (didn't see Tim Brent, Clarke MacArthur, Dion Phaneuf, and couldn't get autographs from Jeff Finger or J.S. Giguere). If they have a morning practice, they start arriving after 8am and are all there by 9:30am. They're not actually on the ice until around 11am, but we didn't stay that long (you can go in and watch them practice, too).

A few pictures...Collapse )

I was a little surprised by the apparent attitude of some of the players. We were unfortunately beside a group of autograph hounds (with a bazillion pictures to get autographed by each player) which probably didn't help, plus it was early in the morning, but I just keep thinking that without fans like us, they wouldn't be getting their super insane salaries... Anyway, I'm incredibly grateful that they were generous enough to stop and give autographs and pictures and it was a good enough experience that I'd like to go

Mike Van Ryn [27 Jul 2010|01:27pm]

Don't know if anyone else caught this, but TSN reported this morning that Mike Van Ryn has left the Leafs to become the assistant head coach of the Niagara Icedogs of the OHL.

I wish him all the best in the future (even though I had wished that he was healthy enough to be able to play again with the Leafs. When he was healthy, I think he was a solidly good defenceman).

You can read the Toronto Sun article (dated July 26) about this here: http://www.torontosun.com/sports/hockey/2010/07/26/14834726.html

Versteeg [30 Jun 2010|11:51pm]

tomatops
Leafs acquire F Kris Versteeg and Prospect Bill Sweatt in exchange for Stalberg, DiDomenico, and Paradis.

Essentially, Versteeg is a solid two-way top-6 forward that fits into a 2nd line mold but will likely find himself playing on the top line with the Leafs, barring any other major deals for prominent forwards by Burke.

Thoughts?

So. Phaneuf is captain.

Thoughts/feelings? He wasn't my first choice.

If this is how the Leafs are going to play for now on, I'll happily take back the bad things I said about the recent trades!

My personal feelings: I hate. hate. hate. LOATHE Brian Burke. Of course they're going to keep sucking if it's a brand new team every season. Changing them more than half-way through won't help either. Why not can Wilson, he hasn't done anything right for 2 years.

Crazy in-game adverts [17 Dec 2009|02:10pm]

My friend and I were at the game last night, and we loved that crazy advert that went on for an hour where the guys talked about various timezones and matters of the spirit. Does anyone know if it's available to watch online? Because I can't find it anywhere and I must have it. Thanks for any help!

Dear Toronto Maple Leafs,

could you please recommend a new sports franchise to become a fan of? I would really appreciate an end to the suffering that comes with Leafs fandom.

Love,
Anonymous.

Well, at least Keith Acton is off to a great start. He won close to $100,000 in Lotto 6/49 last week!
